Prepared with your classic Thomas’® English Muffins, these ham, Gruyère, and caramelized onions sandwiches are delicious and great for breakfast or brunch.
Preparing breakfast or brunch does not get easier than this, especially nowadays, since we spend more time in the kitchen due to social distancing. This idea came to me because I was tired of eating the same thing all the time for breakfast.
Something that is never missing in my pantry is the Thomas’® Original Nooks and Crannies® English Muffins, so I just added a little ham, some leftover Gruyère cheese, and leftover caramelized onions, I put them together and voila! an easy meal in no time. I love that Thomas’® is on a mission to help you break free from blah not only for breakfast but for lunch, dinner, and all your other snacking moments.

The ingredients and why they work together…
Gruyère cheese is a sweet but slightly salty, melting cheese. It is traditionally used in fondue, French onion soup, and even Mac and cheese.
Thomas’® Original Nooks and Crannies® English Muffins are a must for this recipe: They are crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside, they are the only English muffin with the original Nooks and Crannies® texture. Plus, they are super versatile and toppable–think about all the possibilities and unique breakfast recipes ideas!
Ham: I’m using uncured cooked-ham, but you can use any ham you have in hand.
Caramelized onions are perfect for this recipe. The sweetness of the cooked onions will balance the saltiness from the cheese and the ham, making the result extra flavorful.
Here are the steps to make these delicious open faced English muffin.
1 and 2-Heat two tablespoons of oil in a large pan over medium heat, add the onions (I used about 3 large onions), stirring every few minutes until onions are golden brown. This process takes a minimum of 20 minutes.
3-Hand or fork-split the Thomas’® Original Nooks and Crannies® English Muffins in half. Line a sheet with foil and place English muffins halves.
4-Top with ham slices.
5-Top with Shredded Gruyère cheese.
6-Now add the caramelized onions.
Bake at 400°F for about 3 to 5 minutes until cheese is melted.
These are so easy to make that even the kids can help you prepare them. So visit your local Walmart and grab a bag of Thomas’® English Muffins and get inspired by a world of possibilities.
You can even do your shopping online (like I did), which is perfect during these times of social distancing.
