Yaniqueques are a typical savory snack found mostly in the beach area of Dominican Republic.
If you decide to visit Dominican Republic one day, you must stop at one of the famous “frituras” ( food stands) found all over the island and grab your “yaniqueque“; These crispy fried-dough finger foods are commonly eating all over the island but mostly in the beach area.
Everyone has their own recipe- some people add butter or oil to the dough; others might add eggs, and some keep it really simple just by mixing flour, salt, water and baking powder.
Today I’m going to show the way we prepare this delicious and savory finger food in my household. My mother taught me this recipe and now I’ll share it with you!
The trick to make the perfect yaniqueque is to knead the dough well and let it rest for at least 20 minutes; This process will allow the gluten works his way to create an elastic dough, which will result in airy and light yaniqueques.
Some people love to accompany this savory fried bread with hot chocolate or coffee for breakfast. Others, prefer to eat it with fried salami and a cold beer at the beach.

There are different types of Johnny Cakes, but this recipe is the one I am familiar with and was looking for. You know how I like to eat them?…with a drizzle of sweet condensed milk as a frosting! Yum!
That’s right Luis, there are different types. Some people like it sweet, others like me prefer the savory version. ?
